How to sort and organize alerts in Notification Center for iPhone and iPad

The whole point of Notification Center, Apple’s always-accessible alert drop-down, is to make it easier find and stay up to date on the information that matters the most to you. By default, Notification Center will list app alerts in the order in which the app was installed. You can take control of notification handling on your iPhone or iPad, however, and organizing alerts and notifications in a way that makes the most sense to you, either by time and date, or by whatever order you wish.

How to manually sort the order of alerts in Notification Center

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Notification Center.
  3. Under the Notifications View section, tap on Sort Manually to select it.
  4. Now tap Edit in the top right corner.
  5. Under the Include section simply drag items to reorder how you’d like them to appear in Notification Center. For example, if you want Calendar alerts to always appear first no matter what, drag the Calendar app all the way to the top.
  6. When you’re finished organizing, just tap Done in the upper right hand corner.

How to sort Notification Center alerts by date and time

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Notification Center.
  3. Under the Notifications View section, tap on Sort By Time to select it.

That’s it! Notification Center will now sort things in the order you’ve specified or by time, depending on what option you chose.

How do you sort notifications on your iPhone or iPad? Do you prefer them to appear in the order they were received or do you put your most cared about apps first? Let me know in the comments!

13 Unexpected Sources of Energy that Could Save the World

13 Unexpected Sources of Energy that Could Save the World

If humans are going to keep living in the style to which we’re accustomed, we need to find alternatives for fossil fuels. Partly that’s because we need to reduce pollution — and partly because those fossil fuels are going to run out. But alternative forms of energy may look a lot weirder than you think.

Adam Levine Is People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive

Adam Levin is People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. The word is out that the coach on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ and Maroon 5 frontman is this year’s winner who will grace the cover of the magazine’s annual issue. Get the details! Days before the official announcement and the unveiling of what is sure to be an alluring cover, Gossip Cop reports that it’s Adam Levine who has the honor. The site, which lives up to its ‘busting bad dish’ mission, was the first to report last year’s winner, Channing Tatum, so clearly they have a reliable source. The 34-year-old Los Angeles, CA native Adam Levine previously had moderate fame as the frontman of the multi-Grammy-winning rock band Maroon 5 known for such recent hits as ‘Payphone,’ ‘One More Night,’ as well as their international chart topping hit ‘Moves Like Jagger’ and getting a cameo from the real Mick Jagger for the music video. Now after four and a half seasons on the reality TV singing competition ‘The Voice’ Adam Levine’s fame has snowballed as he has been alongside fellow music superstars Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green as as well as Blake Shelton with whom he has an ongoing bromance which has [...]Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/RightCelebrity/~3/O3873eFfb-w/

The Plans to “Fix” the Health Care Law

Democrats are engaged in a tricky game right now: They want to do something to respond to public outrage over the flawed implementation and broken promises of Obamacare. But they don’t want to do something that further breaks Obamacare.

“People are mad at us because the ACA rollout has been a disaster,” says one Democratic Senate aide. “So we have to show that we hear them and are willing to address the problems at hand. That is doable. Resisting any changes is probably untenable at this point, but there is still plenty of room to make changes that show the public we are listening without doing irreparable harm to the law long-term.”

Obamacare Is Killing Cancer Patients

ObamaCare is supposed to be a huge boon for anyone with a pre-existing condition. Count that another promise broken: It’s actually denying care because of pre-existing conditions.

Millions of Americans with cancer and other chronic illnesses will wind up paying more for lifesaving care, if they can get it all.

UFC Fight for the Troops 3 results: Rustam Khabilov decisions Jorge Masvidal

It was a close fight, until it wasn’t, but the Greg Jackson product found a way to get it done. Rustam Khabilov was able to get past Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision at UFC Fight for the Troops 3 (UFC Fight Night 31) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, on Wednesday evening.

During the first frame, Masvidal was able to stuff all of Khabilov’s takedowns and landed several hard counter punches. Khabilov kept the pressure on and scored with good body shots, but it was Masvidal, quite literally, smiling as the frame expired.

In the second round, Masvidal stalked and scored with leg kicks. Khabilov was able to secure back control for a time, although he surrounded a takedown, but wasn’t able to do much with it. Masvidal attacked with body shots for the full frame and never let Khabilov string together any momentum in the takedown department.

Then the third round happened.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Rustam landed a spinning back kick that landed flush on the neck, which dropped Masvidal backwards to the mat. Khabilov, however, just couldn’t put the ATT product away and past the half way point of the final round, it was Masvidal doing all the pressuring. Masvidal later attempted his own spinning back kick and the Daegestani took his back only for Masvidal to return the favor and then separate.

Khabilov earned the unanimous decision nod, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27. He moves to 17-1 in MMA while Masvidal drops to 25-8.

Congo army, rebels clash near border despite peace calls

By Kenny Katombe

MBUZI, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) – C ongolese troops and M23 rebels bombarded each other near the Ugandan border on Monday and international envoys called on both sides to cease fire and allow a peace deal to take hold.

Congo’s army accused the rebels of shelling the frontier town of Bunagana and said it showed M23′s ceasefire declaration at the weekend was worthless.

The rebels said they were ready to sign a peace deal but that they had been attacked with heavy weapons.

A rapid army advance in the last few weeks has driven rebels from towns and cornered them in the steep, forested hills along the Ugandan border, raising the prospect of an end to a 20-month rebellion that has gripped Congo’s mineral-rich east.

South Africa is hosting leaders from the Great Lakes region and southern Africa to back Ugandan-sponsored peace efforts, but the latest violence shows the Kinshasa government and the rebels remain far apart.

“This is not fighting, it is bombs launched by M23 targeting the population of Bunagana,” Congo army spokesman Colonel Olivier Hamuli said by phone. “They are targeting civilians.”

Bunagana was the last rebel-controlled town to be recaptured last week and rebels are still in the hills nearby. A Reuters reporter said government troops had seized Mbuzi, a strategic hilltop above Bunagana, on Monday after hitting it with tank and rocket fire. Seven rebels were captured, he said.

On Sunday M23 announced a ceasefire – a declaration Hamuli described as a lie, saying the army would pursue the rebels.

Citing Congolese military sources, United Nations-backed Radio Okapi said on its website that four civilians had been killed and 10 wounded in Bunagana on Monday.

ENVOYS PUSH PEACE DEAL

M23 complained that the army had attacked its positions in the hills with heavy weapons. “Our movement reiterates that we are ready to unconditionally sign the peace deal agreed on Sunday November 3 in Kampala as soon as the mediator in the dialogue sets a time for the ceremony,” it said in a statement.

Envoys monitoring the conflict for the United Nations, European Union, African Union and United States jointly urged both sides not to undo progress made in the talks in Uganda, saying M23 should renounce its rebellion as agreed and the army should hold off from further military action for now.

The rebellion is the worst faced by President Joseph Kabila since the end of Congo’s last major war a decade ago.

In an embarrassment to Kinshasa and the United Nations, M23 seized Goma, capital of North Kivu province, a year ago after troops fled and U.N. peacekeepers stopped protecting the town.

That prompted changes in Congo’s army, a stronger U.N. mandate for a beefed-up peacekeeping force and intense pressure on Rwanda to end its alleged support for the rebels. Rwanda has repeatedly denied backing M23.

Congo’s army has swept through towns across North Kivu in recent weeks though the advance has slowed as rebels retreated into the hills they used to launch their revolt last year.

Uganda said some shells from Congo had landed on its soil on Monday but that it was not clear who had fired them.

An U.N. official in Uganda said thousands of residents were fleeing and 17 had been killed by shrapnel.

“We were 4 km from the border and the explosions were so bad we had to pull back. The streets are full of people running from the fighting,” said the U.N. refugee agency’s representative in Uganda, Lucy Beck.

Box Office: ‘Ender’s Game’ Opens to Solid $1.4 Million Thursday Night

Sci-fi epic Ender’s Game grossed $1.4 million as it began rolling out in North American theaters Thursday night, despite the distraction of Halloween.

Ender’s Game, a co-production between Summit Entertainment, OddLot Entertainment and Digital Domain, is the latest YA film property to attempt to establish a franchise. The movie is expected to win the weekend race with a gross in the $25 million to $30 million range, and should see a boost from its Imax run.

By way of comparison, Jackass: Bad Grandpa also posted a Thursday night gross of $1.4 million last week on its way to a $32 million opening.

The action-adventure, costing $110 million to make, is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Orson Scott Card, whose anti-gay comments have riled many (though he has said Ender’s Game isn’t a YA property, it has been made widely available in schools).

Directed by Gavin Hood, Ender’s Game stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin. Set in the near future, Ender’s Game revolves around a young boy (Butterfield) who is recruited by the military to stop an alien race from destroying the world.

Ender’s Game is a sizeable gamble for Gigi Pritzker‘s OddLot, which financed much of the movie and dispatched sister company Sierra/Affinity to sell the movie internationally. Last weekend, Ender’s Game debuted at a soft No. 5 in the U.K. with just under $2 million, but the film could make up ground as it continues to roll out in additional foreign markets.

Outside of the Hunger Games and Twilight film franchises, YA film properties have struggled at the box office. This year, The Host, Beautiful Creatures and Mortal Instruments: City of Bones all flopped.

The other two new nationwide entries this weekend are Relativity Media and Reel FX’s animated 3D pic Free Birds and CBS Films’ sexagenarian comedy Last Vegas, starring Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline as four friends in their 60s who travel to Las Vegas for a bachelor party. Mary Steenburgen also stars.

The big headline internationally this weekend will be Disney and Marvel Studios’ sequel Thor: The Dark World, which began rolling out Wednesday in the U.K., France and a handful of other markets, grossing north of $8 million and pacing ahead of the first Thor. On Thursday and Friday, Thor 2, with Chris Hemsworth returning in the title role, opens in a number of other major markets before hitting theaters in North America on Nov. 8.

Lenovo claims battery life crown with new Yoga tablets

Lenovo is claiming that its new Yoga tablets will offer 18 hours of battery life when browsing the web, which would be the longest when compared to other tablets.

The company’s new Yoga tablets, which will come in 8-inch and 10.1-inch versions, will provide 12 to 14 hours when watching high-definition video, said Stephen Miller, Lenovo ambassador. The tablets were announced at a launch event in New York.

[ Also on InfoWorld: Tablets shipments to mushroom by 53 percent in 2013. | Understand how to both manage and benefit from the consumerization of IT with InfoWorld's "Consumerization Digital Spotlight" PDF special report. | For a quick, smart take on the news you'll be talking about, check out InfoWorld TechBrief -- subscribe today. ]

The battery life can be even longer if the tablets are set to low screen brightness, Miller said.

If Lenovo’s claims of battery life hold up, the Yoga tablets will beat competition handily. Tablets today are at best able to squeeze up to 11 hours of battery life. The Yoga tablets have high-capacity cylindrical batteries similar to ones used in laptops, which helps prolong battery life.

The 8-inch tablet, which is priced at $249, weighs 400 grams. The 10.1-inch tablet is at $299 and weighs 603 grams. The tablets will run Android 4.2 and be available in the U.S. on Wednesday. The company did not comment on worldwide availability.

The battery is housed in the tablet’s circular base, which makes it easier to grip the device. A kick-stand allows the tablet to sit firmly on the table.

With a circular base, the Yoga tablets bears a resemblance to Notion Ink’s now-defunct Adam tablet, which was one of the first Android tablets to ship when it became available in late 2010.

The Yoga tablets run on MediaTek quad-core processors with a clock speed of 1.2GHz. Both of the tablets display images at a resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels.

Other features include a 1.6-megapixel front camera, a 5-megapixel back camera, up to 32GB of internal storage, and micro-SD card slot for expandable storage.

Lenovo has introduced a range of tablets, PCs, and hybrids in the last few years. The new products are important as buyers move away from PCs to mobile products.

“We shipped more smartphones and tablets than PCs,” during the third quarter, Miller said.

New Relic Analytics Aims to Speed IT Problem Solving

The world may not be buying New Relic’s “world’s largest Big Data database” claim, but its Rubicon analytics tool is nevertheless garnering some respect. “The main selling point for New Relic seems to be the ability to deliver rapid analytics results, allowing developers to institute solutions before problems broadly impact customers,” noted tech analyst Charles King, which “is fairly crucial.”

New Relic last week previewed a new software analytics tool that aims to let companies use live application data to provide clear, actionable business insights across an organization.

To be launched next year, Rubicon will be built on the world’s largest Big Data database, according to the company, and deliver real-time business insights, as well as performance visibility, dynamic visualization, and answers to application queries in real time.

“This is a niche category — application programming management,” Jim McGregor, principal analyst at Tirias Research, told TechNewsWorld.

“This isn’t analyzing consumer data, sales data or anything like that — it’s just analyzing how an IT system is running in terms of resources and data it’s using,” he pointed out.

“It’s some creative writing on their part,” McGregor continued. “I especially like the bit about the world’s largest Big Data database. How do you quantify that?”

A New Relic spokesperson was not immediately available to comment for this story.

What Rubicon Might Entail

“New Relic is saying it has a software package called ‘Rubicon’ that is better at managing IT resources used around an application, the data and everything else,” McGregor remarked. “This is definitely important, especially as you’re trying to use virtualization techniques and everything else to maximize the use of IT resources.”

However, “you can’t just put this into the Big Data analytics category of ‘We’re analyzing the world,’” McGregor contended. “This is analyzing IT — and it’s for the IT resources department, or a service provider providing data applications, or whatever.”

Beefing Up Mobile

New Relic also announced extended capabilities for New Relic for Mobile Apps, which it characterized as the first and only end-to-end mobile app monitoring solution that analyzes performance data all the way from the device level to back-end services.

That mobile solution was unveiled in April, and includes Sony among its customers.

One new feature introduced for the mobile application is user interaction traces, which monitors the sequence of events and identifies poor code paths, getting traces for different activities such as screen loading in a series timeline broken down by time spent at each stage.

Another is on-device metrics. This provides insight into device level data ranging from database, CPU and memory usage to user interface performance.

The extended version of New Relic for Mobile Apps will be available for iOS and Android applications in Q4.

Monitoring Node.js

Further, New Relic last week announced the general availability of a service that provides comprehensive and advanced code-level monitoring for Node.js.

Node.js is a software platform used to build scalable network apps, particularly on the server side. It uses JavaScript and contains a built-in HTTP server library, giving users more control over how the Web server works.

The service lets users view the overall health of applications from an aggregate response time dashboard and drill down into code-level data. It has a customized agent with advanced capabilities such as end-to-end transaction traces, alerts and notifications, application maps, code-level diagnostics and error tracking.

The agent supports the Express 2/3, Restify and Connect frameworks for Node.js. It also supports MongoDB, MySQL, Redis and Memcached.

The agent makes New Relic the only SaaS solution with a single, integrated view alongside Web and mobile application monitoring for five languages, server monitoring and plugins, the company claimed.

Deconstructing New Relics

“New Relic’s approach differs from conventional business intelligence and Web analytics primarily in size and scope,” Charles King, principal at Pund-IT, told TechNewsWorld.

Other companies appear to be planning or attempting similar projects to collect data spanning multiple platforms and operating systems and thousands of apps, King said, but “the main selling point for New Relic seems to be the ability to deliver rapid analytics results, allowing developers to institute solutions before problems broadly impact customers.”

In a market where customers can and do quickly discard old apps for new ones, King observed, the ability to do this “is fairly crucial.”
